Red-E Motorsports “The ORIGINAL” Holley Sniper 1100 EFI Conversion

Price range: $ 1,495.00USD through $ 1,970.00USD

Description

Want modern EFI on your aircooled VW? Want it to be as simple as possible? We have you covered! We have packaged an adapter kit that allows you to install the Holley Sniper 1100 single barrel EFI throttle body to your stock dual port manifold! This also works with other stock replacement manifolds for a bit more airflow, or with slotting of a single port manfold bolt holes they can be used there as well! We have installed our EFI units on engines from 1300 Single Port up to a 2276 w/ FK7 camshaft.

We modify the throttle arm, throttle plate, and the idle air control to work properly on the aircooled VW engine and flash the ECU with a new tune specifically to work with our engines. What comes programmed on the unit is primarily for a 64 to 67 Ford inline 6. Our cam profiles are too different, our intake runners are much longer, and our HP curves are totally different. We have over 20 years of EFI experience on the aircooled VW engine and have built a solid tune for the Holley Sniper to work incredibly well with our engines.

We include three of our own target tunes with your purchase loaded onto the handheld display! You can choose from 12.5, 13.5, and 14.5 to one air fuel ratio at idle with the rest of the tunes being the same. With the engine warmed up, easily change from one tune to the next to see what idle mixture your engine runs best with, after that simply drive your VW to let it tune itself! No laptop needed!

Our kits include:

  • Custom aluminum offset adapter to bolt the throttle body to the stock VW dual port intake manifold
  • New throttle cable with sheath and bracket for fan shroud including quick release ball joint for throttle arm
  • 90 degree fuel inlet and outlet fittings to clear fan shroud and engine lid
  • Oxygen sensor bung
  • 3/8NPT jam nut for mounting the Holley Sniper “Coolant Temp Sensor” in the lower engine tin for a proper warmup reference for the EFI to work from
  • Throttle return spring
  • Chrome plug for old throttle cable hole in fan shroud
  • -6AN stainless steel bung for return line
  • -6AN fitting for stock outlet of fuel tank

What we modify on the original Sniper throttle body:

  • Modify the existing throttle arm with new pull location and ball joint for throttle cable
  • Modify throttle plate which helps with warmup RPM and prevents surging of the idle when using a distributor with vacuum advance
  • Modify the Idle Air Control ports for more airflow to improve cold startup and idle

What you need to do:

  • Weld the return fitting into the gas tank
  • Install the supply fitting and run the fuel system (3/8″ fuel line, over 60psi fuel system needed)
  • Weld the oxygen sensor bung into the exhaust
  • Run the new throttle cable. The cable fits to the VW chassis like stock and gets routed into the engine bay through a sheath
  • Bolt the Sniper throttle body onto your intake manifold
  • Wire positive and negative of the Sniper unit directly to the battery
  • Connect the yellow wire to the negative side of your ignition coil (do not do this if you have an aftermarket CDI ignition! You need to run to a “tach” signal output if you run this style ignition)
  • Connect the pink wire to “key on” power, either the positive side of the ignition coil (easiest), or to another keyed source
  • Plug in the oxygen sensor
  • Install a suitable air filter. For a Type2 we have found the stock intake elbow for 68 to 71 Type2’s can fit over the top of the throttle body! Otherwise we offer a K&N brand washable filter for other installations!
  • Turn the key, check for fuel leaks, and start driving!

The results are amazing!

  • No more plugged jets
  • No keeping it running after a hard decel
  • No worrying about jet changes with elevation or barometric changes. The system constantly tunes itself and keeps it on target. You can literally drive from the ski resorts at 10,000 feet down to the beaches at sea level and never touch a thing!
  • Can be used with stock ignition, or aftermarket. If you have, or install and MSD distributor you can plug it into the Sniper unit and with minor wiring you can have a full ignition map as well! Imagine, full fuel and ignition control at your fingertips!
  • On-board datalogging! You can datalog all EFI parameters with the handheld unit and view it later on your laptop with Holley’s FREE software!

OPTIONS!

Fuel System: This system runs on 58psi fuel pressure. The stock VW fuel injection used from 1975 to 1979 is not high enough pressure for this system. We offer it separately in case anyone already has a high pressure fuel system from a previous EFI install that they are replacing, etc.

Air Filter: We offer a K&N air filter that fits on top of the Sniper throttle body. The Sniper is just a bit bigger than a Solex so a metal filter won’t fit, but any rubber based filter for a Solex will fit if needed. This air filter will not fit single or double cabs due to the structural brace right above the intake. In this application we use a 1968-71 bus rubber intake elbow to come off the side. On 68-71 buses you can actually use the entire stock oil bath air filter assembly and we would highly recommend it. On our 1965 shop truck we use the 68-71 elbow, run it to a 2″ID to 2″OD exhaust pipe adapter from the local auto parts store and that fits perfect into the stock oil bath filter. That way you still have superior air filtration, and intake heat like factory for better cold weather drivability!

12 ft CAN Extension Cable: We offer this separately as not every application needs this. Manx buggys, sandrails, etc don’t need or want a handheld out in the elements. Just make sure you cover the plug to keep weather and dirt out of it in that case. With a 12 foot cable extension you can install the handheld in the glovebox, even on a bus! That is where we install them when done in our shop. Without the cable, it will reach the back seat area of the car.

Cruise Control: We offer a universal cruise control that installs very easily onto our Sniper EFI kit! Make those long road trips a breeze! No more sore ankle holding the throttle to maintain speed all day! This is one of the best upgrades we’ve done to our shop truck since we installed our HD Type-2 Liter engine and EFI! You can find it here!
